Flipping and Punching | Everything You Need To Know!

No more secrets! If you want to catch bass in heavy cover, this video is for you! Did you know you can punch with a dropshot? In today's in-depth video the guys cover this trick and so much more as they give away all the secrets to consistently catching bass with a flipping stick.

When Summer largemouth bass head deep into heavy cover it requires very heavy tackle to get them back out. Punching, flipping, and pitching are the three techniques used to reach these bass lurking in the shadows. If you're the first angler in your area to pick up a flippin stick you will be amazed by how many bass are deep in the cover. Matt and Tim put their heads together in this nearly 40-minute seminar and teach everything from creature bait selection to color preferences, right down to which speed reel will make your life easier for a long day of flipping.

Traditionally these bass are reached using a heavy Texas-Rigged creature bait on 65 lb braid. This method is deadly and has been responsible for producing an incredible number of big bass. However, as fish become conditioned there are times that a heavy jig and even a heavy dropshot will far outshine the Texas Rig. Knowing this little nuances makes all the difference and Matt and Tim aren't afraid to show you exactly how and when to make the adjustments.

Below is a breakdown of all the gear discussed in today's video. It is broken down by style to make it easier to follow along.

How To Find Bass In Shallow Cover

Have you bass moved shallow? Are they in the trees,  pads, or grass? Here is everything you need to know to find them quickly so you can build patterns more efficiently and start catching more fish.

Step 1) Identify the edges of the cover. Whether your cover is 20 feet across or 2 miles across, you need to start your search on the edges.

Step 2) Move to the very center and determine if the fish are spread evenly throughout the cover or if they're only in select locations.

Step 3) Seek out the anomalies like points, creek channels, different types of grass or trees that stand out from the rest, etc.

Step 4) Repeat the process in similar locations until you have an effective pattern that can be duplicated.

What baits do we use to quickly pick apart cover? We start with fast moving baits then slow down and pick the cover apart. Below is a break down of our confidence baits for locating early season fish in this cover.

Tips for Flippin' and Pitchin'

Flipping heavy cover has evolved drastically the last few years. A term that once meant throwing a texas-rigged plastic into brush now encompasses everything from punching matted vegetation to pitching a jig around docks. Perhaps the term has been abused or perhaps we're learning new ways to expand and catch bass that are hiding in the dark.

However you want to look at it, Flippin' has changed. In this video Matt breaks down everything from traditional texas rigged plastics on a straight shank hook to newer twists including screw locks, Superline hooks, and even jigs. The changes include rods as well so if you're flipping with a 7'6" rod you might want to consider expanding into both shorter and longer rods for different approaches.

Below is a breakdown of some of the gear Matt and Tim have found to help them catch more fish when flipping and pitching in cover...
