Basic Swimbaits

Since all of the recent posts have been dedicated to concepts and techniques I thought it was time to put up a post with some actual fish in it. These fish are a perfect example of what you can do with a swimbait in the fall.
Not only can you catch a lot of fish, but you can catch fish of all sizes. It doesn’t matter what part of the country you’re in, if the bass are actively pursuing baitfish a swimbait can help you put more fish in the boat. Its also important to note that though both of these baits are designed to imitate a trout, there are no trout in this particular late. Again, proving the theory that bass are willing to eat large meals, even if they don’t know exactly what they are.
The fish in this video were caught on a 8″ Huddleston Deluxe Swimbait and a 7″ Triple Trout Swimbait, both are available from Tackle Warehouse at the links provided. The 2nd to last fish in the video was just under 3 lbs so don’t feel like these baits are too big for the bass in your lakes.

Hi Matt, I’ve finally made up my mind to commit to the big baits until i get one in the boat. Id toss them for a bit here and there but not stick with it. I went out today, after they had a 3 day flw tournament on the lake and threw an rof 12 8″ hudd. I actually had about a 3 lber follow it up to the boat!! that got me excited and gave me some hope. My question is, when the fish follow but dont wanna commit, what should i do/change to make em eat it? color, retrieve?

I was trying to target some longer points with deep water access/breaks off them and with a creek channels near by. unfortunately i dont have any electronics yet so i was going by my topo map the best i could.

    thanks for any advice,
keep up the great articles and videos!

Craig, I’m glad you liked the video. That’s the key to getting swimbait fish into the boat… you don’t let them control the fight.

E+J, Nice! Keep it up. As long as those fish are willing to feed I’d be out there too. Isn’t it amazing how warm you can stay when the fish are biting? :-)

Brad, those are great questions. There is a video I shot some time last year that is back a few pages on the site that should really help you with your questions. Here is the link: http://tacticalbassin.com/making-switch-braid/

I know that this does not have much to do with the video but how do you set up your leader? Do you put heavy braid as your main line and lighter mono as your leader? Thank you so much and this is a great video as usual.
